Just this is the born place of both skeleton and bobsleigh. First skeleton race took place in 1884 on the road connecting villages Cresta and Celerina. First winner was Mr. Austin of Australia, who was rewarded with a good bottle of Champaign.
Saint Moritz at the end of 19th century was famous just for its skeleton conduit, unique in the World. And that was the reason, why skeleton was integrated into Olympic Games competitions in 1928. Nowadays, numerous slides for sleighs, bobsleighs and skeleton were built worldwide. However, the maintenance is very expensive, that is why the International Federation makes effort to utilize it as much as possible. This is, of course, one of reasons for skeleton return among Olympic sports. |
